Reading/Language Arts

Text: Houghton Mifflin/SRA Direct Instruction

Learner outcomes: Students will...
• complete the learning of all essential phonics skills
• expand their literary vocabularies
• show that they know various techniques to be able to read and understand what was read
• use writing as another process to respond to reading
• be encouraged to read, think, and write about many subjects
• be introduced to many different types of literature
• improve their oral reading skills through practice in partner reading, cooperative groups and other activities
• demonstrate the ability to write a telling sentence
• demonstrate the ability to write an asking sentence
• recognize and write a paragraph
• participate in listening and speaking exercises
• be able to spell the weekly list of words

Students also start going to language arts lab in second grade. Here the basic skills that they learned in the classroom are reviewed, practiced, and enriched.

What Parents Can Do

"A child's success in school depends upon many factors, but none more than involved, supportive parents."

• Read with your child
• Be sure he/she has the needed school supplies throughout the year

scissors, glue sticks, pencils, pencil box, crayons, colored pencils, markers, one plastic folder, two 2 pocket folders, three wide-lined one subject notebooks and two boxes of tissues

• Replace items through out the year
• Visit the classroom
• Volunteer
• Attend parent/teacher conferences
• Communicate any changes in the family situation or routine
• Demonstrate love, confidence, and consistency in working with your son/daughter
• Check your child’s totebag for notes and homework

Special Services

A continuum of services is available for Pine City’s special needs learners. At the second grade level, Title I and special ed. are available. Interventions that might be made include an increased amount of instructional time, changes in methods and/or materials modified expectations, etc. Special education is offered according to the guidelines for the St. Croix River Education District. Pine City also has a school psychologist and a school nurse.
