School Readiness
School Readiness helps families with children, 3-1/2 to 5 years-old, prepare for a successful school experience.
If you have concerns or needs for your family or young children and are not eligible for services from other local programs, School Readiness may be for you.
School Readiness can help provide learning experiences for children and parents before the children enter kindergarten.
Family Center preschools help children develop learning readiness skills so they will have the confidence, independence, and social abilities to become successful learners. Preschool classrooms and activities are designed to provide a variety of fun and meaningful hands-on learning experiences and staff members pay close attention to meeting children's individual and developing needs. All teachers are licensed in early childhood family education or early childhood special education.

Early Childhood Developmental Screening

Early Childhood Developmental Screening is a check of a child’s development, vision and hearing, growth, health history and immunizations. Screening takes approximately one hour, and a parent or legal guardian stays with the child during the screening process. Screening takes place at the Pine City Elementary and is free.
Who needs to be screened?
All children living in Pine City School district. The state of Minnesota requires that all children be screened before they enter kindergarten. This screening is most valuable when completed before your child turns 4 years old but must be completed before starting kindergarten in a Minnesota public school.
Why is screening important?
Screening helps identify children who may benefit from early childhood services before they enter school and connects them with the appropriate resources and programs. If your child has already been screened, he/she does not need to be screened again.
At the conclusion of the screening, the parent/legal guardian will be given a summary of the screening results and have the opportunity to discuss concerns they may have about their child’s development or circumstances that could affect their child’s learning. Information regarding early childhood programs and other resources will be available. The screening summary will become a part of the child’s school record.
Screening appointments are offered intermittently throughout the school year.
Screening is by appointment only.

What is ECFE? - Program Description

Early Childhood Family Education is a Community Education Service of the Pine City Public Schools ISD #578 and is the first connection between families and the school district. The primary mission is to provide Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) programming. ECFE is a program unique to Minnesota and is offered in over 300 school districts throughout the state. The mission of the Pine City Schools ECFE program is to support and strengthen families – the first and most important teacher in a young child’s life. ECFE classes offer three components:
Parent and Child Interaction Time – an early childhood teacher provides
developmentally appropriate activities for parents and children to enjoy together.
Guided Play for Children – a portion of the class is devoted to learning through play with licensed teachers and assistants while parents participate in a parent discussion in a separate room.
Parent Discussion Time– parents and caregivers participate in a discussion, led by a licensed parent educator. Joys and challenges of parenting are shared and topics are designed to address the developmental issues of each age group.
Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes help parents meet the challenges of parenting and help young children (birth to 5 years) develop socially, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. The program sets the stage for parent involvement and children's success in school while strengthening the parent-child relationship. ECFE is a public school program staffed by licensed parent and early childhood educators. ECFE operates on a sliding fee scale; no one is turned away for inability to pay. (Note: children under 18 months do not separate from their parents.)
